It's no secret within the Ocheliad that I, Imperon Showdah, am a major history buff. It's my college major and my great love in life. It should come as no surprise then that when I found some...problems with the historical portrayal of the Scarlet Crusade, that I would move to correct the errors I found. What surprised even me is exactly how large this project ended up being.
I have not taken the time to cite sources as I would have if this paper were intended for publication in a scholarly journal, or if it was the final assignment in a some history course at my college. Instead, I have assumed that the reader has a decent knowledge of World of Warcraft and is able to use such convenient things as WoWwiki to to chase down any information they didn't already possess.
In some ways though, this essay does resemble something out of a scholarly journal. However, instead of drawing on the insight of a recent science symposium, I instead point to Star Wars. I do avoid using words like "I" or "you" in the paper, instead referring to "a player" or "players."
This essay is an out of character creation. I am going to be editing it in order to create a fully in character version, written by Imperon Showdah instead of by his player. But that will have to wait.
The Scarlet Crusade quite possibly holds the unenviable position of being the single most despised and hated group in World of Warcraft. Players will loudly defend the plight of the Defias, sing praises to the Dark Iron nation ("they have the best tavern in the whole world") and even wonder if Onyxia was truly evil or not. But the Crusade, oh no. They're "religious zealots" and therefore quite entirely wicked.
From the first time a young undead encounters them outside the township of Deathknell, to the first Alliance encounter with them in the Scarlet Monastery, to the final showdown with the Dread Lord Balnazzar, players are told the same thing: The Scarlet Crusade is evil, their followers corrupt or insane.
It is time that the truth is made known. It is time that the political motivations of those seeking to destroy the credibility of the Scarlet Crusade are revealed. It's time to show how much more complicated the World of Warcraft is than its designers ever intended.
To pass judgement on something, it is important to understand what it is. To understand what something is, it must be studied in detail. This holds true for an individual object, say a backpack left unattended in an air port, as well as a group of people, or a natural phenomena. To pass judgement without first studying something is to do it injustice.
The Crusade has been accused of many things. Ranging from accusations like "they kill everyone who's not one of them" which require little explanation, to "they're religious zealots" which requires a good deal of explanation before any attempt can be made to do away with it. The simple existence of these accusations must not be allowed to control what a person, any person, thinks. Instead, only truth, what has been done, what has been truly been said (and who said what), should be considered. Rumor has no place in a well reasoned opinion.
This essay is intended to give a closer look at the organization known as the Scarlet Crusade. This will include a recitation of every accusation leveled at the Crusade as a whole. The history of the Crusade, its goals, its opponents and everything else of note will be included as well. Accusations will be addressed as it makes sense to do so. We begin.
